Female Air Force Captain Yu Xu perished during a training accident on November 12.

Yu was the first female J-10 pilot in China and one of China’s only four female pilots who are qualified to perform in air shows.

The two J-10 planes collided over Wuqing, Tianjin. One of the planes crashed in Yutian county in Tangshan, Hebei province.

The two pilots immediately deployed their parachutes. The male pilot was seriously injured and sent to hospital. Yu crushed by the wing of the other plane and died.

Yu was born in Sichuan province and enrolled in Aviation University Air Force in 2005. Between 2009 and 2015, Yu participated in many air displays.

The black box of Yu’s plane was found on November 14. Crime Team 37 is still investigating the cause of the collision.

On the morning of November 16, Yu’s comrades, families and friends attended her funeral in Wuqing, Tianjin.

The air forces of New Zealand, Italy, Pakistan and the UK sent their condolences to China’s air force.
