Many people in China believe that those from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region are born to be singers and dancers.
While that may be a stereotype, a number of indie singers from Xinjiang are meeting up for a night of Uyghur music night at DDC Club. Huang Xu, After Journey, A-Mac and Nawkar, four top Uyghur singers, are slated to attend.
Huang made a name for himself in 2013 with numerous freestyle battle across the country where he took second place among Chinese rappers. After two years’ stage experience, Huang released his first mixtape Self Redemption in 2015 and began his national tour the same year.
After Journey is a rapper and hip hop music producer. He founded the top tier hip hop music label Easy Boyz Gang in 2013 and worked hard to spread rap and hip hop music to Chinese listeners.
A-Mac is a member of the Uyghur rap group 099x and known for recording the theme song of Crossed Lines (2007). His song “Bang” was featured on Backbone, a rap compilation released in Taiwan. In 2014 A-Mac published his first album Mask Mixtape and followed it with 1986 the next year. A-Mac was named Chinese Rapper of the Year and awarded for Best Chinese Rap MV at the 2016 Hip Hop Awards China.
Nawkur graduated from Beijing International Studies University in 2013 and stayed in Beijing to pursue a career in hip hop. Nawkur won first prize in the school’s singing competition but had a hard time performing music after graduation. In 2015, Nawkur appeared on Sing My Song and joined the team of musician Liu Huan. In 2016 Nawkur released his first EP Hi Nawkur.
