Indie band The Nightcrawler is known for its special blend of traditional Chicago blues infused with Chinese elements and the roots of Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas.
Guitarist Wei Wei and bassist Wang Zheng have played together for more than 10 years. In 2016, the two made a pilgrimage to famous blues venues across the US to team up with local blues musicians and contemporary blues masters.
Vocalist Yu Yifeng is also known as “Bluesman Eric.” Yu started listening to Western rock with his parents when he was young. After he got his first guitar at the age of 15, Yu developed a special interest in blues and went to study in America to experience the authentic blue atmosphere.
After Yu graduated in 2010, he returned to Shenzhen and Hong Kong to play blues. Two years later, Yu came to Beijing to perform at the famous blues bar CD Blues.
Yu continued to study blues with Zhang Ling, China’s top bassist and best blues player. He recorded an album of six songs in Switzerland with Swiss and Italian blues musicians, then returned to China to tour with the album.
The Nightcrawler’s rhythm is provided by Thomas Wilson, a drummer from Chicago who played with B.B King and Buddy Guy.
