The local indie group Ma Band is playing at Lanxi Bar on Saturday night. The group was founded in 2015 by students at the Beijing Midi School of Music.
Ma Band’s songs mainly consist of gothic metal, rock and nu metal. Its name is derived from a netspeak term for a feeling of electrocution – the kind of shocking performance they want to deliver to their fans.
Zhou Yanting is a professional singer and the lead vocalist. She studied singing with Wang Xuanmai, the former director of Music Department at Central Conservatory of Music, where she learned to perform bel canto, pop and rock styles.
Suojie is the guitarist. A member of the Va ethnic group in Yunnan province, Suojie studied electric guitar and digital music. Her primary interest is fusing nu metal with Chinese instruments.
Mao Gonghong, also known as Maliu, is the bassist and tuner of the band. Mao learned to play jazz drums at a young age and began cooperating with indie bands in 2011. He has participated in more than 300 concerts and is studying recording in Midi School of Music.
Chen Bin is the drummer. He studied music since childhood and hopes to be a professional performer.
